SoCan, aka South Canada, aka Upper Manhattan is still getting a nice dose of white weather.

I’m so focused today anyway, however this is just drives it home how nice it is to have a noise dampener (I have no complaints up here) and a change of scenery. Bizzard-wise of course it’s not optimal for many businesses.

Anyone else see sledders?

High Above, Insects Travel On Sky Superhighways
by Christopher Joyce

NPR – February 5, 2010

Every year, an enormous migration takes place in Western Europe. Millions of moths fly for days, riding wind currents southward in the fall and north in the spring…

I found the following story on the NPR iPhone App:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123330735&sc=17&f=1001

MY TAKE: Right when you discover the veritable and astonishing adaptation of moths to the environment–wham! There’s that swarm of bats who’ve shown up to feed on the intrepid sweater-eaters. What metaphor does that bring to mind?

In business and marketing, the innovators whose first generation products are snatched up and redone (for better or worse) and then marketed by the big fish who swallowed them. Another is in war. The reactive, Napoleon-style strategy and “bat” mentality of winning battles by staging your attack where your enemy can’t possibly win. Of course Napoleon botched this when he ventured to Russia. Also see terrorist and guerilla warfare.

In boxing, you have the infamous rope-a-dope — letting your opponent burn himself out punching you round after round sending you onto the ropes. Then whip around and unleash a flurry of blows on him when and where he just can’t recover because he is completely exhausted.

What others can you think of?

Thanks to everyone who chimed in about the fellow who is creating these circles. He is still hard at work despite the chill weather. They are quite cool to discover and they are springing up in some unlikely places. I lve how people avoid walking through them… At least at first.

That’s ice on the ground. I like kicking it early in the morning.

It’s official. The suspected murderer David Bell has been caught. Meanwhile, Montrel has been held in jail to get him to either turn Bell in or testify against him. As I understand it, David is his cousin. This was a long time in coming. More updates as it develops.

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was joined today by Joseph M. Demarest, Assistant Director-in-Charge of the FBI’s New York office, in announcing the arrest of a fugitive wanted for the December 2008 stabbing death of a Chicago man.
DAVID D. BELL, age 20, whose last known address was 5814 South Indiana in Chicago, was arrested late Tuesday evening, without incident, by FBI Special Agents and Detectives from the New York City Police Department.
Bell was tracked to a public laundry located at 630 Eagle Avenue in the Bronx, where he was found doing his laundry.
BELL has been the subject of a nationwide manhunt, coordinated by the Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF), since March of last year after being charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP), which is a felony offense.
According to the complaint, in January of 2009 BELL was charged in Cook County Circuit Court with First Degree Murder for the stabbing death of Isiah Stroud, following an altercation between the two men in the 1500 block of West Jarvis in Chicago.
After being charged with this crime, attempts by the Chicago Police Department to locate and apprehend BELL were unsuccessful. It was later learned that BELL had fled the state and the federal warrant charging him with Unlawful Flight was issued.
Subsequent investigation by the Chicago VCTF tracked BELL to New York City, were he was eventually arrested.
BELL is being held without bond in New York City at Manhattan Central Booking, pending his extradition to Illinois.
This case was investigated locally by the Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) which is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the Chicago Police Department and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police.
Detectives from the CPD, Area 3, also assisted in locating BELL.
The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Copies of the criminal complaint filed in this case are available from the Chicago FBI’s press office at (312) 829-1199.

Inwood Hill Park – Manhattan, NY. Who made these Andy Goldsworthy-esque circles? Perhaps they are not art, but some strange religious ritual. We’ll see. I think I may know the person behind this and I will investigate further. I’ve been noticing these pop up more and more over the past week. The first one I found in this area was made from pine needles. And, come to think of it, I’ve seen them in other parts made from pine cones going back months. This is an explosion in volume. It makes running in the park feel like an adventure as they change from day to day. Has anyone else seen these?
