Thanks to Barry Goldensohn for this nugget of insight on the importance of community and qualities of character when undertaking a creative endeavor. Over one hundred years ago the referral and the network were a major parts of one’s arc of achievement.

If you are an entrepreneur or work in a startup, I heartily recommend this new blog by my brother Adam Berrey. http://bit.ly/sblender.com/ He’s just getting started on the blog, however he’s been through his share of startups over the past decade and his experience shows. The opening post lays out some very useful insights into the kind of personal conflicts that are typical in a startup. He gives insight into how to tackle them and stay on top.

Why did this 4-day, intensive seminar feel so empowering and so little like work? Well it boils down to one thing for me. Purpose. McKee hits the point of creating meaningful emotions though story, and I’ve committed to that goal in life as a writer and storyteller no matter the size of the screen or audience.
Damn that’s a hard ideal to live up to. As for the collision of private and personal life, I’m going to dial back the tweets and posts for now as I refocus on Screaming Panda and the great stories we are working on for the digital realm. I’m also glad to see he’s embraced the social media potential of his site storylog (?) on the web and the community created by his classes. I must say that there is nothing like the contribution of a great teacher and McKee does for story-telling and screenwriting what one would hope for for any complex teaching challenge — he weaves a great story while laying out the facts and truths as if they’re just part of a larger tale. He sends you staggering into the lowest lows and the ugliest of truths, and launches you up to the mist dizzying highs with expert timing and edge if. And one really cannot apprectiate the power of the ending until he gets to it and lays it on you. Cheers! Sent from my iPhonePosted via email from Kevin Berrey

I started the day with a run and now in the final class it’s all coming together. Watching CASABLANCA with Robert McKee now.

NYC – this post was intended for yesterday. Let’s just say it was pretty nasty out last night. It was nice inside the Hotel Pennsylvania and ther we trekked through the last of McKee’s major observations on the elements of story design. I much prefer the 4-day setup of this class except that it allows more time for “life” to interject and halt the flow of ideas and learning.
Ther were so many nuggets in this class, yet the one that comes to mind is McKee’s occasionally brilliant sense of timing. What he can do with the twitch of an eyebrow is genius. He is a first rate teacher. Pehaps the best and most passionate and charismatic one I’ve had.Sent from my iPhone

Many interesting students here asking some great questions. Every one from Danish actors to NBC marketers to ad agency folk from Virginia and a Korean Dr who wants to write an 80-episode soap opera, or bankroll someone else to do it. Needless to say, breaktime is always fleeting and its crucial to make calls and anwer emails at lightning speed.
